A Hard Day's Night

CHAPTER 1

When Nico finally arrived home after a hard day of work, he did not expect to see a dead man face down lying on his carpet.

Without identifying who the victim was, he rushed helter-skelter out of the room and called the police and the ambulance, as every normal man would do. The female police officer told him to wait outside and protect the site, but Nico seemed to be enraged by her impolite calmness. He used to be a kind and calm person. What changed him? It was freezing cold in December, and Nico had to wait on the stoop outside the apartment. “F*ck the police speed in London!”, he muttered and lit a cigarette.

As a matter of fact, it only took the police 3 minutes to get there. They were professional, and the policemen came in and out constantly from his apartment talking in their professional terms which Nico had problems understanding. But who cares? All he wanted at the moment was a permission to get back to his OWN apartment and a good bath. Jesus Christ, he was freezing!

“Sir? Mr…uh, Mr Turconi?” One of the cops asked tentatively.

“Yes, can I come in now? Look, at least can I stay in the corridor? It’s just I have to work tomorrow and I had a hard day today. It would be much helpful if you could just—”

“Yes, sir.” The cop interrupted him. “But before all of that, sir, we’ll have to ask you a few questions. First, how well do you know the victim, Mr Jonathan Benamou?”

“Who?”

“The victim, sir? That is Mr Jonathan Benamou.”

He couldn’t breathe. Nor think.

Dizzily he stepped back to his living room, the crime scene. Before the police had ever had time to stop him, he bent down to check the pulse of that body, not surprisingly, the corpse was deadly cold and stiff. Nico withdrew his hand and stood up with assistance of the cop who asked him to come in.

He couldn’t breath. Nor think.

He fainted.
